Parsing the Law as he sees fit? »

From what I read in the paper (for some reason the story is not online), former Superintendent Spencer Mullin is claiming that he could award professional status to two of the three teachers without a recommendation by the Principal because they previously had such status at other schools in the commonwealth.
The law that permits the awarding of [...]

Generoso did NOT recommend Professional Status »

When asked by myself at the School Committee meeting tonite, “Did you propose professional status for these three teachers?”
“No, I did not” Principal Jim Generoso responded.
Were you asked to? I continued.

“No, I wasn’t”
Have there been any morale problems or repercussions at the school?
“There was confusion and worry at first, But I’ve asked everyone to wait [...]

This morning’s Lowell Sun has former Superintendent Spencer Mullin’s response to accusations that he provided early professional status to friends prior to his recent retirement.
It is his contention that these three teachers had excellent credentials, and it was “a good faith effort to obtain and retain the services of valued teachers with impeccable credentials.”

Candidates Night, School Committee Race »

The School Committee discussion during the Annual Candidates Night was all about points of view.
You basically have two candidates challenging each other, Mike Miles and May Paquette, and Dr Mike McNamara being pulled in to the discussion (with what looks like the lucky 3rd candidate position).
Its a strange race, as you really have three incumbents [...]

Schools looking for 2.77% increase »

Approving a Draft Budget for the next fiscal year, the School Committee has approved a proposed budget of $28,610,390.00, an increase over last years budget (after paybacks and transfers back to the town) of 2.77%.
A significant issue, of course, is the stimulus money that cannot be depended upon for the future, as well as increases [...]

Back to work.. Mullin staying put for now »

Superintendent Spencer Mullin has rejected any call for him to leave his position early. A story in yesterday’s paper basically says that he’s submitted his retirement paperwork as of a certain day, and he plans to follow through with the final months of the position:
From the Lowel Sun article:

Last month the committee asked school attorneys [...]

Tom Rose takes responsibility »

“In summary,” Dr McNamara said during tonight’s meeting of the School Committee, ” there was a reporting error — a rather substantial reporting error.”
“There is no fear of Dracut losing $1.4 million in state aid,” he continued, as he explained that an end of year report was incorrectly filled out.
This had caused a letter from [...]
