Sports Fees increased »

Joe Wilke made a motion tonight to set sports fee at $150 per sport with a family cap of $900.  At the subcommittee meeting, Tim Woods had recommended the $150 fee without a cap.  Interesting.

“I think its time for fees,” Board member Mike Miles agreed.

Wilke explained that total budget for athletics is about $260,000 a year. These fees would a be in the middle of the fee range. He also emphasized that those who are low income would be waived. At the subcommittee meeting earlier, Wilke had said that if the fee was set to $200, then they would bring in about $180,000 or so, but Athletic Director Tim Woods pointed out that the increase in fees would reduce the number of participants, which would ultimately reduce that amount).

The board voted unanimously for this.

WIlke then made a motion to add an additional fee of $300 for the hockey program, to help pay for ice time.  (Woods had recommended $400, I believe).

The board voted for this as well.

When it comes to music and arts, he mentioned that he’s been contacted by the music community on this.

Dr Scott now explained that the subcommittee is looking at what is appropriate at each level, and what is affordable to be sure all concerns are taken into effect.

Wilke made a comparison between sports and the fine arts, and how each could help to support their own programs.

I’m told that the Globe has a reporter in the audience, it will be interesting to see what they report on.

Friday Night Football postponed until Saturday »

From Athletic director Tim Woods:

The Varsity Football Game, scheduled for tonight, Friday 10/15 has been postponed

until Saturday,10/16 at 6PM here at Dracut High School

The Freshman Football game scheduled for today has been postponed

until Saturday 10/16 at 10AM at Tewksbury

This game is also a great opportunity to meet with candidates for office who are doing “visibility” prior to the games. With Tewksbury being such a key town in the Senate election, I’m sure we’ll see Finegold and Tomasek  people out there.. stop by and say hi.

Schools continue to move forward »

A few bumps in the road, but Superintendent Stacey Scott has installed a new interim Special Ed director, as announced at last week’s school committee meeting.

From what I hear, there is no rush to hire a replacement for Linda Trouville.

It seems that he is bringing on a few contracted consultants for a while to keep things going as he designs a reorganization of the department. We’ll have to keep an eye on that.

Football Coach Jason Houston had another tough weekend. It’s a very young team this year, and it looks like he’ll be working hard to get them up to where they need to be.

And if you want to see some proof that Gerry has no idea what’s going on in Dracut  but what he’s being fed, check out his latest post… “how close Mullin and Sheehan were”… lol.

It looks like the dark side is looking to try to tie Sheehan to the failure of a Superintendent that Deeb and Mercier foisted upon us for 18 months (before he jumped ship). Oh, and it looks like there is a plan to start attacking Scott as well… welcome to Dracut.

As to the election.. it looks like Zimini is taking on Blatus’ role as the “kiss of death” for candidates he supports. Makes you wonder what would happen if Jimmy O decided to come back and run again next spring.  Would Zimini support O’Loughlin as an attempt to help out Teddy K?
