On the Clock Charity

The Sunday Lowell Sun this morning repeats the story that we talked about yesterday on the air on 980 WCAP”s Saturday Morning Live.

We spoke with Greater Lowell Tech School Committee member Erik Gitschier, as well as among ourselves, about the incident back in September where the Superintendent of Schools at the Tech allowed a number of teachers to attend a golf tournament for a Lowell charity.

The teachers were granted a paid day off (and subs had to be brought in to fill in for them), while administrators that attended had to take vacation or personal days.

I can find no one that agrees that teachers, on our dime, should be participating in this type of event. It cuts back on valuable education time, and commits taxpayer money to a charity that is supposed to be going to the education of the children.

Of course, Superintendent Mary Jo Santoro will find nothing wrong with this. It seems an ongoing issue with that school that the administration can do what it wants with little accountability.

Face it, she says she works for the Commissioner of Education, not the school committee.

Yet another blemish on the Voke and the incompetent superintendent. Lowell is fortunate to have a committee member like Erik Gitschier to represent them. Unfortunately here in Dracut our reps just go along to get along. Same old same old. Disappointing.

I believe they have to go along to get votes and find jobs for their relatives and friends. That place has been hackarama since Lowell Trade. That is why Erik is not liked he asks to many questions. You notice he gets no support from the other fakers on the board Same in Dracut Screw committee. No I did not mis spell. You may have to edit that word the golden greek instagater does not like it.

You’re getting pretty cynical there Bill. Our school committee seems to have things going ok right now (though I worry about a budget deficit).

Our school committee is not doing as good as you think sorry (my opinion). The budget will be a problem.

The transportation budget was always going to be a problem.
The state doesn’t allow you to transfer education funds into that account, so it can only be funded by town funds, bus fees and other sparce incomes (rents).
State law needs to be changed to make this more flexible.
