Money to Repair to Hildreth Cemetery authorized

Damage to cemetery (photo via wikipedia)

An item that passed later in the town meeting, after all the article 6 people left, was approval of funding from the Community Preservation Act fund to start repairs to the Hildreth Cemetery.

Back in October of 2009, a young man from the neighborhood caused damage to over 100 headstones in a fit of rage.

Charges were made against him, and restitution will be due, but nobody knows if it will ever come through.

Rather than wait to hear, the town meeting decided to agree with the Community Preservation Committee to allocation $30,000 to repair the cemetery (this was necessary now, so that the work can get done prior to winter).

If restitution does come through, then the money can be returned to the CPA funds.

In this way, I believe we were able to get state matching funds to help with the repairs because of the historic nature of the site.
