From the Lowell Sun Column

State Rep Kevin Murphy, D-Lowell, apparently doesn’t find The Sun particularly memorable. Murphy, who also serves as the attorney for the Dracut School Committee, was discussing the option of advertising for an interim school superintendent in local newspapers when his lapse in memory occurred.

“You said The Boston Globe .. and the .. and the.. ?” said Murphy.

Lowell Sun,” answered school committee member Mike McNamara.

Maybe Murphy is still smarting for the heat he took in print for representing the four Lowell assistant school superintendents, including his own wife, in scoring impressive pay raises during the economy downturn that precipitated huge local-aid cuts. Or, maybe it was the ribbing he and other delegation members received in The Column for endorsing the embattled Kazanjian.

Speaking of newspapers, School Committee member Mike Miles said he’s never read The Globe, except maybe the sports pages, and doesn’t plan to in the future.

“I have no problem advertising in The Lowell Sun (for the superintendents position),” said Miles, possibly sucking up to the hometown paper just a little.

Dracut School officials tried to tamp down the latest potential political flap, the future of the Parker Avenue Elementary School. Officials have been floating the idea of closing the school in coming years and consolidating students into the town’s three other elementary schools. Local politicians must be afraid of the backlash from parents over such a move because School Committee member Ron Mercier made at least three separate requests at the committee’s last meeting to make sure parents at the school know about this week’s meeting.

School Committee Chairman Matthew Sheehan said there are no plans to do anything yet. “At this point, all it is is a discussion,” he said.
