Town Meeting Monday..

The Lowell Sun reports that we are once again afraid that we will not meet a Town Meeting quorum next week.

With very few items on the warrant, there is little to draw people out other than the feasibility study article.

Finance committee chair Gary Marsella spoke with us last Saturday on 980 WCAP about discussions that the committee had had with the school committee on this article, and he told us that they would be hesitant to support the article unless the schools agreed to some sort of split responsibility for the funding (schools pay for some of it, town the rest).

During the school committee meeting last night, I heard no discussion about this. So as of now, if the article passes then the study would have to come out of the town budget.

We’ve been told that the study will take about 9 months to a year to complete, which could bring it beyond the current fiscal year. Although we would be reimbursed for about half of it, that reimbursement could be in the next fiscal year..  where would you cut $450,000 out of the town budget.

But as both Warren and Gary said, a study is always a good thing. Information is needed before decisions can be made. The only question is how to pay for it.
