Sheehan/Miles Submit Original Proposal to Town Meeting

I know we just had a long School Committee meeting tonite, and I will get back to that.
There was some great discussion on the new alternative education for at-risk youth, as well as some improved Special Education programs.
I did stop by just to quickly ask Matt Sheehan about the proposal he has put in for fall town meeting.
As you remember, at the last meeting of the School Committee, Matt had made a proposal to not allow the hiring of past and present School Committee members to school department positions until after they had been off the board for 5 years.
The board ultimately voted to amend the proposal to include just current and future members.
“When I was voted in,” Sheehan told me “I had promised the original proposal.”
To follow through on that promise, he has gone beyond the school committee, and decided to put it in front of the people themselves.
“The people who voted for me wanted this, so I am going forward with it at Town Meeting instead.” Sheehan said.
Mike Miles has also sponsored the Town Meeting warrant article as well.
It states:
That No member of the Dracut School Committee PAST or present be hired for an Employment position in the Dracut Public Schools for a term of 5 years after leaving office.
As a town meeting vote, it would be much more difficult politically for future boards to vote to change this policy for exceptions or other instances where they wanted to hire someone.
It will be interesting to see how the people feel about this article. In the interest of good, clean government, I will vote for it… not to target anyone specifically, but to make the issue a harder one for boards to change in the future.
