Matthew Sheehan Calls to Avoid Patronage Jobs

From Matt Sheehan’s Campaign:

Dracut, MA, 28 April 2008“I will make it my first duty upon taking office to call on the school committee to set it as a policy,” Matthew Sheehan stated “that the Dracut School District would not hire previous School Committee Members for a position within the Dracut School System for the first five years after leaving office.”

The Dracut Town Charter already restricts Selectmen from taking the position of Town Manager for the same time period.

Incoming Superintendent Spenser Mullin is taking the reigns of the district as of July 1st. It is expected that he will then supervise much of the hiring at that point.

As School Committee members, we should release him of any implied pressure to hire anyone that he does not feel is best for the position.

As for the positions that the board is responsible for hiring, this would stop us from projecting an image of providing patronage positions for former colleagues.

It would not, however, stop the repetition of the 2005 attempt by my opponent to maneuver the hiring of an unqualified candidate for the position of Business Manager. One way to reduce such political patronage would be by voting to replace my opponent.

The parents and taxpayers of Dracut deserve a School Board that they can trust. This policy would be proactive in moving us in that direction.

ABOUT Matthew Sheehan – Sheehan is a candidate for Dracut School Committee. Strongly supported by parents of the community, Sheehan looks to be a voice for them, the taxpayer and for change on the Dracut School Committee.
