Dracut ends 2007 summer season with Fireworks

The last of the summer concert series was held last night.

With the ending of the performance by “Moonglow,” the crowd of about 300 moved over closer to the entrance to the school complex to get a better view as the fireworks began.

Earlier in the evening, there were snacks, games, and a presentation by the Dracut Leadership Academy’s Black Belt Academy.

As is traditional now in Dracut, the summer begins on July 4th with a concert and fireworks show, and then finishes near Labor Day with the same.

This of course doesn’t happen on its own. The Thursday night concerts this summer almost didn’t happen. A lack of participation and volunteers had lead to a near cancellation of the series.

Instead, a group refocused and joined together as the Dracut Summer Concert Series committee made keeping this going a priority.

Kevin Willet of Washington Bank, and a member of the Town Finance Committee, lead a call for donations and volunteers to make this happen.

While talking with him during the concert, it was obvious that its not the work that concerns him, but the funding. There is a fear among the committee that the series will not continue in the same form next year.

“It costs nearly $700.00 per band, and the fireworks show is $5,000.00. The 50-50 and glowstick sales bring in some, but not enough” he said.

He hopes that we will at least get the summer opening and closing concerts and fireworks for next year, but the concerts in between are at risk.

But that’s a topic for another day. There’s a lot of time between now and then.

Today, we celebrate the coming of fall, and thank the committee for a great summer series. Its one of those events that defines the character of Dracut.
