Phil Thibault: Nuturing Business

I have heard references made to a Master Plan developed for Dracut
approximately a decade ago. The determination made was the people did not
want to attract business. I find this difficult to believe, unless of
course, the question was asked to garner this answer.

There are many hard working individuals that have started businesses within
Dracut, whom have encountered the bureaucracy of which I spoke. There are,
no doubts, many more that have relinquished the dream due to these
encumbrances. Are the people of Dracut “business xenophobes”? I
seriously doubt this to be true. We are instructed that the special
permitting process is in place to protect us. Protection from outside
influences that we can not control and that will destroy of quality of
life.

A level of control needs to be rendered through town zoning by-laws. But
the wall built for protection years ago is becoming a prison to a new
generation. The special permit process must be reviewed and revised. Not to
protect the quality of life that we had, but to ensure a quality of life
that we desire.
